J M Juran - Quality colossus and rare gem of a human being. His life is an institution.
In Mahabharatha (Grand India), an Indian mythological epic, there is a story about the royal instructor for practice of arms, Dronocharya (considered the best coach ever) not being able to teach a poor disciple for lack of time. The poor disciple, Eklavya, retreats to a jungle and places a mud and thatch replica of his guru and practices every day. The presence of the mud and thatch replica of Drona is so powerful that Eklavya actually acquires the skills of a master archer.
While the story goes on, the key lesson is that people can learn from even a true master's statue. JMJ has had a similar effect on millions.

His contributions to society were great and will not soon be forgotten. I extend my deep sympathies to the Juran family and all those who knew him.

A man's greatness is not in whom he measures himself against, but rather the quality of the people who measure themselves against him. With that in mind, Dr. Juran leaves a legacy that will long be unsurpassed, as he has for so long been the yardstick for so many of us. We have lost a great thinker, a great leader, and -- most important -- a great human being.

Having worked with Juran Institute for approximately 12 years, I had the privilege of interfacing with Dr. Juran on multiple occasions. He was a man of vision and conviction. It would be impossible to truly measure the impact Dr. Juran had on society in general and specifically on the disciplines of quality management. He will be missed. My prayers are with the family in this great time of need.

I was very sad to hear of Dr. Juran's passing. I thought at the rate he was going, he might out live me! I was always facinated to hear his stories of life long ago and the positive changes that ensued due to his many contributions to improving quality. My sympathy to the Juran family and to those of you who worked so closely with him at the Institute.

The day before he passed away I was telling a new business neighbor in the WTC Amsterdam about Juran what we do etc. and how inspirational Dr. Juran was, still actively writing at 103! I mentioned I had the privilege of meeting him at his centenary celebrations and that he still had the ability to hold the audience captive with his words of wisdom. Little did I know that I would be posting a tribute to his life the next day. What a truly full, dynamic and impactful life – the kind that earns one immortality. My condolences to his family and friends.

I had the good fortune of meeting with the great man on the 21st of February 2002 at his home for one hour .
He was humility personified . He made me feel ever so special that day .
As I sat before him - I felt like I was sitting before history , before Quality , before God...infact it was exactly like that .
A "Quality" human being - I don't like talking about him in the past tense .
Although he said "Let no one weep for me"...I couldn't help sobbing when I heard of the news .
My condolences to his immediate family .

It is indeed a testimony of Juran's own physical and mental quality that he lived beyond a century years. A tremendous amount of discipline and personal quality would have gone into the making of this great man. In fact, he has transcended beyond the strict confines of quality as a subject and blended management and quality together. His Trilogy and Quality Control handbook are exemplary and to date remains the most authoritative writings on the subject. May his soul rest in peace and Let hundred & thousand Jurans blossom from his legacy!

There are some who become synonyms to what they propagate. To me Juran is a Synonym to Quality.

I do not think he has left the practitioners of Quality and related field. He has made an impact and place that cannot be removed by his physical absence. His wisdom and teachings would continue to make his presence felt.

While the world has lost a great man in Dr. Juran, it has gained so much from him in the advancement of our current society. There are very few that can claim a legacy as meaningful to the way we live as the one left by Dr. Juran. While I have only worked with Juran for about a year and a half, seeing all that he has accomplished has been an inspiration to me. I am proud to be a part of the foundation that perpetuates the progress that he so vehemently fought for in the realm of quality improvement. His life is a prime example that one person can truly make a difference. I wish his family the best and offer my greatest sympathies to them.

Dr. Juran was a truly remarkable figure in the 20th century. I find it fascinating that after aiding the United States in World War II he then was a major part of helping Japan get back on their feet. This belief Dr. Juran had in aiding a global community and leaving his mark for all people is exemplified by what he did in post-war Japan. Immigrant from Romania, famous student of the University of Minnesota, and worldwide leader in quality, Dr. Juran cannot be claimed by one group or nation. He was an asset to all of mankind. My condolences go out to his family; I know you are proud of the life of Dr. Juran.

The universe is blessed by Dr. Juran’s contributions to humanity and the global economy.

He has touched so many lives - he taught people how to fish – how to use our minds creatively and empowered us with tools so that we CAN change and significantly improve our work lives by examining and re-structuring process and integrate quality in everything that we do.

Thanks to him, people and businesses have become more successful and continue to flourish. What a wonderful privilege to walk in the shadow of this giant. Thank you, Dr. Juran for sharing your talents with us, for leading by example and for making us challenge ourselves to make a difference.

I am one of the fortunate persons from India to meet Dr. Juran once in IMPRO-1985 at Chicago and during Asia Pacific Conference on Quality -1989 at Singapore. His humility and wise council reminds me all the time the verse 442 in Tamil Bible, THIRUKKURAL, that suggests who is the appropriate wise counselor

“Seek them who can remove present ills
And prevent those that come.”

I am saddened at the passing of Joseph, yet I am very happy to have known him; he touched so many lives. He was a mentor to me and to our learning community. He was very generous when it came to his personal mentorship and to our school, as we pioneered the principles of quality & continuous improvement in the late 1980's and 1990's. Dr Juran sponsored my travel to meet with him on more than one occasion and generously donated to our learning community financially and with the human resources of the Juran Institute and his colleagues.

The vision we formed for our learning community so many years ago, with the facilitation of the Juran Institute staff still stands: "An Innovative Learning Community Committed to Excellence"

I have a picture in my office of Dr. Juran & I at Disney World in 1994; it shall stand for me as a lasting tribute to this great man.

Dr Joseph Juran - is a legend in himself. ( Sorry ! but I would not like to speak in past tense for him )

The most appropriate tribute to Dr Juran will be - to work with a same kind of passion for Quality & try to spread that passion in our surroundings as well.
